Rules of Blackjack
Blackjack, also known as 21, is a classic card game played in casinos around the world. It’s simple to learn, fast-paced, and offers one of the best odds for players. In this article, we’ll go over the basic rules of Blackjack, how cards are valued, and simple strategies to help you play smarter.
Objective of Blackjack
The goal of Blackjack is to beat the dealer’s hand without going over 21. You win by having a hand value higher than the dealer’s, or if the dealer busts (goes over 21) and you do not.
Card Values
- Number cards (2–10): Face value
- Face cards (J, Q, K): Worth 10 points
- Aces: Worth 1 or 11, whichever is more favorable for the hand
How to Play
- Each player is dealt two cards face up. The dealer gets one face-up card and one face-down card.
- Players decide whether to hit (take another card) or stand (keep their current hand).
- Other options may include double down, split, or surrender depending on the rules of the table.
- If a player’s hand exceeds 21, they bust and automatically lose.
- Once all players finish, the dealer reveals their hidden card and hits until their hand totals 17 or higher.
- The highest hand under or equal to 21 wins!
Blackjack vs. 21
A "Blackjack" is when a player is dealt an Ace and a 10-point card (10, J, Q, K) in the first two cards. This beats any other hand totaling 21 and usually pays 3:2 unless specified otherwise.
Simple Strategy Tips
- Always stand on a hard 17 or more.
- Hit if your hand is 11 or less — you can’t bust!
- Double down on 10 or 11 when the dealer shows a low card (2-6).
- Split Aces and 8s, but never split 10s or 5s.
With the basics of Blackjack under your belt, you’re ready to hit the tables and play smart. Good luck!
