Rules of Bridge

Bridge is one of the most popular and sophisticated trick-taking card games in the world. It is typically played by four players in two partnerships. If you're new to Bridge or just want a refresher, this guide will help you understand the core rules and gameplay mechanics.

Objective of Bridge

The goal in Bridge is for your partnership to win as many tricks as possible based on a contract that you and your partner agree to during the bidding phase. Strategy, communication, and memory play a huge role in mastering Bridge.

Setup and Card Values

  • Played with a standard 52-card deck.
  • Four players form two partnerships: North-South vs. East-West.
  • Cards are dealt evenly — each player receives 13 cards.
  • Card ranks: A (high), K, Q, J, 10 down to 2 (low).

Phases of the Game

1. The Bidding (Auction)

Players take turns declaring how many tricks they think their partnership can win and what the trump suit will be (or if there will be no trump).

The bidding determines the contract, which the declaring side must try to fulfill.

2. The Play

The player to the left of the declarer makes the opening lead. Play proceeds clockwise, and players must follow suit if possible.

Whichever side wins the most tricks (meeting or exceeding their contract) scores points.

3. Scoring

  • Points are awarded for fulfilling the contract.
  • Bonuses are given for overtricks, slams, and vulnerable status.
  • Penalties are given for failing to meet the contract.

Basic Bridge Strategy

  • Communicate with your partner through strategic bidding.
  • Count cards and track what’s been played.
  • Use your trump suit wisely and try to control the lead.

Bridge is a challenging but rewarding game. With these basics, you're ready to start playing and exploring its deep strategies. Have fun and good luck!
